Habitat

Grassland or Woodland

This species is found on soil in open woodland areas and parkland, typically growing alongside oak or beech trees. It favors chalky soils and can be found appearing individually or in small clusters. It is more prevalent in southern regions compared to Northern Europe.

Appearance

Cap
Measuring 8 to 20 cm wide, it begins hemispherical before flattening. The surface is initially pale white to greyish-yellow, often developing large cracks and becoming smooth or slightly downy. The margin may visibly overhang the tubes.
Stem
Measuring 5 to 13 cm tall, it is stout and swollen in the lower half, often tapering sharply at the base into a rooting structure. It is pale yellow and typically features a netted pattern that darkens with age, sometimes with scattered red spots.
Tubes
Bright lemon yellow, becoming blue when bruised. They are attached to the stem or nearly free.
Pores
Small and circular, sharing the same lemon-yellow color as the tubes and bruising blue.
Flesh
Firm and pale yellow to white, though often reddish-brown at the very base of the stem. It turns blue quickly when sliced.
Spore print
Olive-green to dark brown.
