Habitat
This common species is found on both living and dead trees. It is frequently parasitic on broad-leaved trees, particularly members of the Rosaceae family such as plums, where it causes Silver Leaf disease. It also grows saprophytically on various other tree types, including occasional occurrences on conifers.

- Small, wavy-edged projections measuring 1.5 to 3 centimeters across; the upper surface is covered in dense, white, woolly hairs arranged in concentric bands.
- Lower surface
- Smooth to slightly wrinkled or warty; dark violet to purplish-brown when young, turning brownish or paler with age or when dry.
- Flesh
- Tough and flexible when fresh, becoming brittle and hard when dry; purplish-brown to whitish, often showing a distinct dark line in cross-section.
