This common species typically grows on conifer debris, stumps, and rotting wood. It is occasionally found on broad-leaved wood. It grows either solitary or in tufted groups.

Appearance

Cap
2 to 8 cm wide; starts convex and becomes flattened or expanded, often with a wavy or inrolled margin; color ranges from golden-yellow or pale ochre to bright rusty-orange; smooth or finely fibrous, sometimes becoming velvety or scaly with age.
Stem
2.5 to 7 cm long, 4 to 10 mm thick; yellow to ochre near the top and brownish toward the base; surfaces are covered in fine white fibers with an indistinct ring zone from the veil; the base is typically covered in white downy growth.
Gills
Crowded and attached to the stem, often with a small decurrent tooth; golden-yellow or ochre, frequently developing reddish-brown spots as they mature.
Flesh
Yellowish in the cap and reddish-brown or tawny within the stem; taste is notably bitter; smell is faint, ranging from indistinct to slightly spicy or mushroom-like.

Rusty-brown to red-brown.
