Appearance

Cap
Measures 1.5–8 cm across. Initially hemispherical, it becomes convex and eventually flattens out. The surface is finely downy or felty, occasionally cracking with age. It is typically red with a pale yellow band at the edge, and turns dull yellow-brown where bruised.
Stem
Measuring 3–7 cm long, it is relatively slender and can be cylindrical or spindle-shaped. The color is yellow near the top, red in the middle, and pale at the base, which features light yellow mycelium. It may show faint orange-red spotting and bruise slightly blue.
Pores
Large, angular, and lemon-yellow or yellow-green in color, turning blue when handled.
Tubes
Lemon-yellow and adnate to the stem with a small tooth-like extension; they slowly bruise blue.
Flesh
Soft and pale yellow, often featuring a red-purple line just beneath the cap skin. It turns blue when cut, particularly above the tubes and in the upper stem, while the base remains a deeper yellow.
Spore print
Olive-green to brown.

Edibility

EdibleTaste: OK ★★☆☆☆

The flavor is described as faint or slightly sour. It is considered one of the easiest small boletes to identify because of its distinctive red cap and yellow-banded margin. The flesh, tubes, and pores turn blue when handled or cut.

Misidentification can be fatal. Never eat a mushroom unless you're 100% sure. This information may be inaccurate. Always consult multiple sources.

Nutrient Source

Ectomycorrhizal

It forms a symbiotic relationship with trees, exchanging nutrients with their root systems.
