Edibility

EdibleTaste: Excellent ★★★★★

Extreme caution is required as this species is easily confused with the deadly poisonous Galerina marginata (Funeral Bell). Distinguishing features include a cap that dries from the center out to create a two-toned effect and a stem that is distinctly scaly below the ring, whereas Galerina marginata lacks these prominent scales. It is also found in very dense, large clusters on wood, while the poisonous lookalike tends to fruit in smaller groups. While the mushroom is described as having a pleasant odor and a mild, mushroomy taste, the stems are tough and should be discarded.

Misidentification can be fatal. Never eat a mushroom unless you're 100% sure. This information may be inaccurate. Always consult multiple sources.

Nutrient Source

Saprotrophic

It obtains nutrients by decomposing dead organic matter, primarily from wood of hardwood and conifer trees.
