Habitat

This species grows on soil in mixed and broad-leaved woodlands, appearing in groups or troops particularly in old woods containing oak or beech trees.

Appearance

Cap
Measuring 3 to 10 centimeters wide; initially hemispherical or rounded, eventually flattening with a depressed center. The surface is dull honey-yellow to brownish, becoming sticky or slimy when wet. The margin is notably grooved and covered in small, irregular bumps.
Stem
Measuring 3 to 9 centimeters long and 1 to 2.5 centimeters thick; firm but brittle, often narrowing toward the base or spindle-shaped. It is pale honey-yellow or whitish, and the surface may appear wrinkled or grooved.
Gills
Initially cream to yellowish, frequently developing brown spots. They are attached to the stem and spaced fairly far apart.
Flesh
Pale straw to whitish in color, turning yellow when cut and reacting strongly with KOH to turn bright golden or yellow. It has a slightly unpleasant, fruity or fetid smell. The taste is spicy in the gills and cap cuticle but mild in the stem.
