Habitat
This common bracket fungus grows on dead hardwoods, including decaying stumps and fallen trunks. It is frequently associated with beech, sycamore, and horse chestnut, though it can be found on a variety of broad-leaved trees where it causes white rot. It grows solitarily, in scattered groups, or in overlapping clusters. In North America, it is often found in riparian zones, inland valleys, and foothills, particularly near urban centers.

Edibility
This mushroom is inedible due to its tough, corky, and leathery texture. Both its odor and taste are indistinct. It can be confused with Trametes pubescens and Trametes suaveolens, which lack the characteristic extensively lumpy cap surface.
Misidentification can be fatal. Never eat a mushroom unless you're 100% sure. This information may be inaccurate. Always consult multiple sources.
Nutrient Source
SaprotrophicIt obtains nutrients by decomposing dead woody materials from trees.
