Habitat
This wood-decomposing species grows in tufts or scattered groups on rotting wood, including stumps, the base of trunks, and buried wood. It primarily favors deciduous or broad-leaved trees, particularly in damp lowland areas, though it is occasionally found on coniferous wood. it is widely distributed globally across forests and woodlands.

- Large and massive, measuring 5-40 cm wide; shape is convex to nearly flat, sometimes with a broad central bump. The surface is dry, golden to rusty orange or reddish brown, and textures range from smooth or finely fibrous to distinctly scaly with age. The margin may be initially inrolled with thick veil remnants.
- Stem
- Stout and fibrous, measuring 3-25 cm long; often swollen in the middle (spindle-shaped) or club-shaped, narrowing at the very base. The color is similar to the cap, sometimes with white longitudinal streaks. It features a yellow, membranous ring near the top that may disappear over time.
- Gills
- Crowded and attached to the stem, often with a short decurrent tooth. Color begins as yellow or dingy orange, maturing to a rusty red-brown.
- Flesh
- Pale yellow to rusty orange; may bruise blue or green when handled.
